Chapter 52: Let Them Eat Cake

I’ve had my hands full all week, so this is the first chance I’ve had to brag on my kids, but I am pleased to report that last Saturday, for the second year in a row, we brought home a first-place ribbon for photojournalism and a third-place ribbon for sportswriting from the New Mexico state student journalism competition.

We found time to have a little fun after the competition ended. First, we stopped at Cake Fetish in Albuquerque:

The 2020 state champion newspaper photojournalist celebrated her win with a cupcake.
A pit stop at the Flying C Ranch gave the kids an opportunity to sample some of the … uh … local cuisine. Those are nacho-flavored mealworms.
Down the hatch.
Yes, that is a sucker with a real scorpion inside.
Yes, he really bit the head off that cricket in the middle of that lollipop.
Ladies and gentlemen, the third-best high-school sportswriter in the state of New Mexico. I cannot believe he actually ate that scorpion. o__O

It was great to see a couple of my students pick up statewide honors, but the real prize for me was the chance to spend the day road-tripping with them. They can be noisy and goofy and over the top sometimes, but they are truly great kids, and I have an awful lot of fun with them.
